Why You Stop Making Progress (and How to Get It Back Quickly)

Have you ever felt like you're finally making progress on your fitness goals, and then all of sudden, you backtrack? Your first thought is:

“This isn’t working any more. I need to change something!”

You’re not alone.

But what if the problem isn’t that you are doing the WRONG things? What if it’s that you are actually not doing exactly what was getting you results in the first place?

This happens all the time, but we fail to recognize it before we are onto the next thing.

In the business of life, we often forget the very habits that helped us feel better in the first place. We drift — sometimes slowly, sometimes all at once — and before we know it, we feel like we’re back at square one.

But here’s the good news: You don’t need to start over. You just need to reset.

Why We Drift Away From What Works

When you first start making changes, there’s usually a clear motivator:

  • You’re in pain
  • You’re unhappy with how you feel
  • You’re worried about your health
  • You want to reclaim energy, strength, or confidence

That initial discomfort drives action. Your brain says, “We need to fix this.” So, you show up and things start to improve. But as your body feels better, the urgency fades.

Your brain says, “We’re good now.”

Without realizing it, small shifts start to happen:

  • You skip a few workouts
  • You go on vacation and forget to do your stretches
  • You grab takeout instead of prepping a balanced meal
  • You stay up later and miss sleep
  • You are not as focused on getting in your daily walking

It’s not a conscious choice. It’s just that the pain is gone… so the priority slips.

Then — almost like it sneaks up on you — the old aches, pains, or low energy start creeping back in.

And the frustration kicks in.

"Why isn’t this working anymore?"

The temptation is to think: “Maybe I need a new plan.”

But in most cases, you don’t need a radical change. You just need to return to what was working.

Chasing New Solutions Won’t Fix It

When we hit plateaus or feel like we’ve backtracked, it’s tempting to chase the next shiny thing:

  • A new workout app
  • A trendy diet
  • The latest fitness gadget
  • The perfect supplement stack

But real, lasting health isn’t built on constantly chasing new answers. It’s built on mastering the basics.

You don’t need to start from scratch every time life throws you off course. You need to hit reset — not reinvent. The key question to ask yourself is this:

Am I still doing the things that helped me feel better in the first place?

If not — there’s your answer.

Why This Happens: The Brain Science Behind It

Image

There’s actually a psychological reason we fall into this pattern.

When we’re in pain or discomfort, our brain enters problem-solving mode. It’s motivated to make changes to remove the discomfort.

But when the discomfort is gone, the reward system shifts. Your brain likes efficiency. It doesn’t like doing “extra work” if the problem appears to be solved.

So it gradually deprioritizes the habits that got you there. Not because you don’t care — but because your brain thinks it’s time to move on.

It’s why consistency is so hard to maintain when things are going well.

How to Reset and Rebuild

Image

You don’t need to overhaul your life to get back on track. You just need to reset intentionally.

Here’s a step-by-step process we use with our Mint Condition Fitness clients when they feel stuck:

1. Reflect Honestly

Think back to the last time you felt really good in your body.

  • What were you consistently doing?
  • Were you strength training regularly?
  • Following a specific nutrition plan?
  • Prioritizing sleep?
  • Practicing stress management or walking daily?

Get specific.

2. Find Where the Gap Is

When did things start to slip? Which habits quietly faded away?

Sometimes it’s obvious — a vacation, an injury, a busy work season. Other times, it’s more subtle — missing a few sessions, feeling tired, losing momentum.

Find the gap. That’s where your reset starts.

3. Recommit to the Basics

Pick one or two habits that made the biggest difference.

It could be as simple as:

  • Returning to strength training twice a week
  • Drinking more water
  • Getting back to your protein targets
  • Sleeping 7–8 hours a night

Don’t try to fix everything at once. Start with the biggest domino — the habit that will naturally pull the others back into place.

4. Get Support and Accountability

When you’re restarting, the temptation is to do it on your own.

But that’s exactly when it’s easiest to drift again. Find a coach, a friend, or a community that will remind you of what you said you wanted, and help bring you back to the habits that will help you get the results you want (and keep you there!).

5. Give It Time

Progress isn’t instant — and this is where many people give up. They expect to feel like their old self again within a week.

But remember: The first time you made progress, it took weeks or months of consistent effort. Getting back will take time too — but it often happens faster the second time around.

You already know what works. You’ve already proven you can do it. You just need to trust the process again.
