Most people don’t think about their ankles until something goes wrong.
But whether you’re trying to play better tennis, hike without pain, or simply move with confidence day to day, ankle mobility matters more than you think.
Tight ankles don’t just make your lower legs stiff…they impact your entire body.
Poor ankle mobility can cause knee pain, hip tightness, and even contribute to low back problems, especially for adults over 50.
The good news? You can change that with just a few targeted exercises each week.
Why Ankle Mobility Matters (More Than You Realize)
Your ankles are the first point of contact with the ground. Every step you take depends on how well they move.
When ankle mobility is limited, your body has to find that motion somewhere else. And that “somewhere else” is usually your knees, hips, or lower back.
Over time, this compensation can lead to:
- Joint stiffness and reduced stride length
- Poor balance and stability
- Greater risk of falls and overuse injuries
- Strain on your knees and back
For active adults, this means more pain, slower recovery, and less confidence in your movement. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
What Causes Tight Ankles?
Ankle stiffness can come from a number of sources, including:
- Years of restrictive footwear
- Old injuries or sprains
- Lack of full-range movement
- Scar tissue or fascial tightness in the foot
- Weakness in stabilizing muscles around the joint
And because mobility tends to decline with age, many people in their 50s, 60s, and 70s don’t realize how much it’s affecting them until movement becomes painful or limited.
The Top 3 Drills to Improve Ankle Mobility
Want to fix the root of the problem? Start with these 3 simple but powerful drills from this week’s video.
1. Foot Rolling (Plantar Fascia Release)
Why it matters: Your feet absorb thousands of steps every day. Over time, tension builds in the fascia and muscles. Releasing this tension helps restore movement all the way up the chain.
How to do it:
- Use a tennis ball or a peanut roller
- Stand with one foot on each ball
- Keep your big toes together and gently roll side to side
- Aim for 30–60 seconds
Coaching Tip: This shouldn’t feel painful. You’re not trying to mash the tissue, just stimulate it. Breathe slow, relax your knees, and let the tissue open up. If it is too intense, just do one foot at a time or use a softer ball.
2. Active Calf Stretch with Raise and Lower
Why it matters: Most people stretch passively. But to create lasting change, your body needs to learn how to control that new range of motion.
How to do it:
- Stand facing a wall, and step one leg back into a classic calf stretch
- Press the back heel into the ground
- Raise your heel (calf raise), hold at the top, then lower slowly
- Sink deeper into the stretch at the bottom
- Repeat for 5–8 slow reps per side
Coaching Tip: Focus on control, not how “deep” you go. The goal is to activate the muscles while lengthening the tissue.
3. Wall Ankle Mobility Drill
Why it matters: This drill trains your ankle to move under load while your foot stays grounded — just like in real life.
How to do it:
- Stand 4–6 inches from a wall
- Keep your hips and shoulders square to the wall
- Foot flat, heel down, slowly drive your knee forward toward the wall
- Try 5–10 reps forward, then 5–10 reps moving the knee toward the outside of your foot
Coaching Tip: Keep your whole foot rooted. If your heel lifts, reduce your range. Don’t rush the movement…it’s the control that matters most.
Why This Matters for Healthy Aging
Good ankle mobility is about much more than avoiding injury. It supports nearly every major movement:
- Squatting and lunging
- Stepping over objects
- Navigating uneven terrain
- Maintaining good posture and balance
And since fall risk increases with age (especially after 60) maintaining strong, mobile ankles is one of the simplest ways to stay independent and active for years to come.
Success Starts with Small Steps
You don’t need to overhaul your entire routine to get results. Just start with these 3 drills. Add them to your warm-up or do them at home while watching TV.
Then pay attention to how your walking, balance, and daily movement feel over the next couple of weeks.
If you're not seeing improvement, or if old injuries or stiffness keep coming back, it's a sign you may need a more complete plan.
That’s where we come in.
