What’s the best way to loosen up, shake off stiffness, and set yourself up for a great day?

The World’s Greatest Stretch

At Mint Condition Fitness, we recommend this mobility drill to almost everyone, especially adults over 50 who want to start their mornings feeling strong, mobile, and energized.

In fact, if you only have time for one mobility drill first thing in the morning — this is it.

It’s simple, effective, and hits all the right areas to help you:

  • Release stiffness
  • Improve joint mobility
  • Wake up your muscles
  • Prepare your body for movement

Watch the video below to see exactly how to perform the World's Greatest Stretch:

In this short video, we'll walk you through:

  • Why this is the #1 mobility drill to do in the morning
  • The step-by-step sequence of the stretch
  • Tips to get the most out of each part of the movement

This is something you can do in just 1–2 minutes per side and you’ll feel the difference right away.

Why This Mobility Drill Works

We wake up feeling stiff because:

  • Our bodies have been still for hours
  • Joints aren’t lubricated yet
  • Muscles are tight, especially in the hips, back, and shoulders

The World’s Greatest Stretch (also called the Spiderman Twist or Spiderman Stretch with Rotation) works because it:

  • Opens up the hips
  • Loosens the upper back and shoulders
  • Stretches the hamstrings and calves
  • Improves spinal rotation
  • Connects breathing to movement

It’s a total-body reset that improves mobility, posture, and circulation — all in one.

Modifications for Beginners

If you have limited flexibility or knee sensitivity, there are a lot of ways to modify this exercise!

1. Don’t Go as Low

What to Do: When you step into the lunge, you don’t need to sink your hips as low to the ground. Keep your hips slightly higher and focus on finding a position where you feel stable.

Coaching Tip: Only go as low as you can comfortably control. Over time, your mobility will naturally improve, and you can gradually work into a deeper position if you choose.

2. Skip the Twist

What to Do: If spinal rotation feels uncomfortable or your range of motion is limited, simply hold the lunge position without adding the upper body twist. Focus on steady breathing and keeping your chest lifted.

Coaching Tip: You can always add the twist later as you build strength, balance, and control. There’s no need to force the movement. Start with what feels accessible.

3. Drop Your Back Knee to the Ground

What to Do: Lower your back knee to the floor when you’re in the lunge position. This provides more stability and takes the weight off the back leg.

Coaching Tip: Use a towel or exercise mat under your knee for extra cushioning. Keeping the back knee down also helps you move more slowly and intentionally through the sequence.

4. Use Yoga Blocks or a Sturdy Surface to Lift Your Hands Higher

What to Do: Instead of placing your hands on the floor, elevate them on yoga blocks, a step, or even a sturdy chair.

Coaching Tip: The goal is to feel supported and in control. As your flexibility improves, you can gradually work toward lowering your hands closer to the ground.
