3 Core Exercises You Can Do at Home to Build Real Strength

If you’ve ever been told to “strengthen your core” but weren’t exactly sure what that meant, you’re not alone.

For many adults over 50, core training feels confusing, uncomfortable, or even intimidating. And if you’ve dealt with back pain before, it can feel risky to try new exercises without knowing whether they’ll help or hurt.

The truth is this:

Your core is one of the most important areas to train if you want to move well, protect your back, and stay strong in everyday life.

And you don’t need fancy equipment or long workouts to make real progress.

What This Video Covers

In today’s video, you’re going to learn three simple but very effective core exercises you can do at home that help:

  • Build real abdominal strength
  • Improve spinal stability
  • Protect your lower back
  • Improve balance and control
  • Support daily activities like lifting, walking, and getting up from the floor

These aren’t flashy exercises. They’re practical, proven movements we use with our clients all the time.

A Quick Note Before You Start

If you have chronic back pain, a recent injury, or pain that hasn’t been evaluated, it’s always smart to check with a medical professional first.

The exercises in this video are safe for most people, but they’re not meant to replace individualized care when pain is persistent or severe.

With that said, these movements can be incredibly helpful for building strength, control, and confidence through your core.

Exercise #1: Plank With Arm Lift

Any time we train the core, we want some type of plank variation involved.

In this version, you’ll start in a standard forearm plank with your feet set slightly wider for stability.

From there:

  • Lift one arm and hold for about 10 seconds
  • Place it back down and switch sides
  • Continue alternating arms
  • Start with 3–4 rounds of 10-second holds per side. Over time, you can work up to 45–60 seconds per arm.

This exercise is excellent for building anti-rotation strength, which is critical for protecting your spine and improving balance.

Exercise #2: Scissor Kicks

This one gets its nickname for a reason.

You’ll start lying on your back with your feet about six inches off the ground. Gently tuck your pelvis so your rib cage stays down and your lower back stays supported.

From there:

  • Lift one leg at a time, alternating legs
  • Then lift both legs
  • That full sequence equals one rep
  • Aim for 10–15 controlled reps.

This exercise challenges your core to stay engaged while your legs move, which is exactly what happens during walking, stairs, and daily movement.

Exercise #3: Floppy Fish

This is a great oblique-focused movement.

Lying on your side, you’ll stay on the meaty part of your glutes and bring your elbow toward your mid-thigh. Use the bottom arm for support as needed.

If you want more challenge, reduce how much you use the supporting arm and rely more on your core.

Aim for 10-15 reps on each side.

This exercise builds side-body strength, which is essential for balance, posture, and protecting your back during rotation.

How to Use These Exercises

You can perform these three exercises as a circuit.

Do:

  • 3–5 rounds
  • Rest as needed between rounds
  • Focus on quality and control, not rushing

These movements work best when they’re done consistently and paired with a smart overall program.

Is This All You Need?

For many people, back discomfort and core weakness don’t come from just one issue.

Often, they’re connected to things like:

  • Tight hips
  • Limited mobility
  • Poor balance
  • Weak glutes
  • Lack of overall strength

These exercises are a great start, but lasting results usually come from a more complete approach.

That’s where coaching makes the difference.
